World Sailing Youth World Championships Selection!

The 29er European Championships 2017 was held in Quiberon, France. This was the selection event for the World Sailing Youth Worlds GBR Team. The top boy and girl British boats would be selected.

After a 7 hour drive and 2 hour ferry, we arrived in Quiberon. We went straight from Nationals, where I sailed with Nathaniel Gordon and came 3rd mixed team.

Once we arrived in Quiberon, we had a day for measurement and chilling, then we had a day for a short training session which was in very light winds. Then, the competition started; a six day long regatta.

We had a fantastic first day with big waves and big breeze! We were absolutely launched, starting well and getting two great top 5's in. Unfortunately on one of our races we finished 3rd on the water, but got a BFD (black flag-over the line). This was really disappointing as there was over 30 degrees of line bias and over 20 boats over (should have been a recall/ ap flag up). Oh well.

We didn't have such a fantastic second day but our third day was again, really good. Unfortunately the BFD meant that we narrowly missed out on Gold fleet by just 6 points! We were in excellent company within silver fleet as many of the top boats were in the same position with black flags, including, our main British youth girl compeitiors, that we needed to beat in order to qualify for the Youth Worlds spot.

The Final series went really well for us. Some of the highlights were winning a race by miles and just keeping our cool, even when the wind was going all over the place. We did pick up another BFD but that is something that we, as a team, need to work on. Our target had been met, regardless.

Overall we ended up coming: 3rd in Silver and crucially, 1st British Youth Girls. Although these results were not what we wanted, it was a tricky week and we have learnt a lot from it, in only our 4th event together...

We have just had confirmation that Emily and I have been selected for the World Sailing Youth Worlds in Sanya, China, this December!!!! We are thrilled! This has been a goal of mine for 2 years and I have been reserve for 2 years running. To be going now feels amazing! To top it off, I've also managed to bag my first year of AS Maths which means, no retakes! Planning commences and the juggling act of training/ events and academic work. Watch this space...
